Patient Populations
Survivors of Domestic Violence
My early career was spent helping women and children recover or find a way out of domestic violence situations. I have worked with survivors of physical, emotional, and financial abuse. I spent a great deal of time working for a women’s center which gave women the strength and resources to leave their partners in a safe and manageable way. Together we developed safety plans, coping skills, and I provided education on the cycle of violence.
Addiction Recovery
I have spent the last five years working with those that are recovering from alcohol and/or drug addiction. I strongly believe that addiction is a disease of the brain much like the physical diseases we are susceptible to throughout our bodies. My previous work in this field includes running groups and individual sessions at various levels of recovery including detox, residential treatment, and intensive outpatient programs.
Counseling for New Parents
I have explicit training and am certified in Perinatal Mental Health. Becoming a parent can be joyful and frightening. I have the skills and training to help guide new parents, and season parents, through parenthood. I also understand the delicate balance of claiming the title of parent, without losing oneself to it. Together we will strengthen the relationship between parent and child AND parent with themselves.
Specializations
Domestic Violence
I am a certified domestic violence counselor/advocate. I work with those that are affected by multiple forms of relational abuse, including but not limited to: physical, sexual, emotional, and financial. Collaboratively, I will help develop coping skills, safety plans, and educate on the rights of the victim. By using this approach, it is my goal to allow the patient to step back and visualize the cycle of violence they are in and come up with alternative ways to exit the situation safely.
Trauma
I’m certified in Seeking Safety, an integrative treatment approach for patients with co-occurring disorder of PTSD and substance use. Seeking safety is an evidence-based practice that can be conducted in a group or individual setting and allows patients to address trauma and addiction without having to go into great details of the trauma narrative, which can be re-traumatizing.
