The animal human bond is a unique and special relationship. It’s one of the rare instances wherein a human can feel true, unconditional love, and positive regard.

Often pet-owners want to share as much of their lives with their pets as they can. Pet parents will watch TV with their animal, read to them, and even listen to music with them.

Spotify, the Swedish audio streaming site, conducted a study to see how pet owners engage in music with their pets. The study showed that pet parents consider the emotional states and needs of their pets as much as, if not more than, those of their human companions. These results lead them to develop a playlist generator which promises to craft a playlist that combines your tastes with your pet’s.

So if you’re feeling guilty about leaving Rover home alone, your conscience can now be cleared.

Creating a Pet Playlist

Step One: Get Spotify

You will not be able to do this without a Spotify account. You can get the basic version that is free and has ads, by using your existing Facebook account to log in.

Step Two: Click The Link

In your web browser, head to https://pets.byspotify.com/.

Step Three: Choose Pet Type

Choose you pet type from dog, cat, iguana, hamster, or bird.

Goldfish, tarantulas, and snakes aren’t included because they don’t have ears to listen to music.

Individuals with animals like rabbits, ferrets, or horses, may want to consider using the playlist for a hamster or dog. Maybe in the future Spotify will expand their animal options.

Step Four: Talk About Your Pet

Once you have selected your pet, think of their personality and answer the prompts.

Step Five: Pet Profile Pic

Now add your pet’s name and their photo. This will create a personalized card to share on social media that will link to your pet’s playlist.

Step Six: Listen and Share

The system will consider your answers and previous listening history, and will create a playlist with 30 songs. Once it’s created, you’ll be encouraged to share it on social media using the hashtag #SpotifyPets.

Though music for pets isn’t an exact science, it’s still a neat idea from the folks at Spotify. The entire experience is sure to go viral, which is one of the ways that Spotify has continued to stand out amongst competitors like Apple Music and Pandora.

I created a playlist for my Australian Shepard husky mix, Blu. My dog is very energetic and friendly, but also apathetic. She and I listen to music often as part of self-care, and to have noise in the background when I work from home. I’ve yet to test whether she will actually like the songs, but I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed the playlist.
